The procedure

Calm, relaxing and safe

Microsuction is a safe and effective way of removing ear wax – it gets its name from the use of a microscope, and that detail really matters.

At Hearology®, every microsuction ear cleaning procedure is carried out using a surgical microscope to provide full depth-of-field vision inside the ear canal.

Every visit is designed around you, so it feels calm, unhurried and reassuring from start to finish.

Appointments take place in private, well-appointed clinics where your safety, comfort and hearing health come first.

The difference

The Hearology® difference

The surgical binocular microscope we use for microsuction

Registered with the CQC

Hearology is one of only a small number of audiology clinics in England registered with the Care Quality Commission.

Premium Private Clinics

We work from comfortable, well-appointed private clinics where our friendly team will look after you and your ears.

Careful & Caring

Every microsuction ear cleaning procedure at Hearology is carried out with a surgical binocular microscope to ensure full depth-of-field awareness. If there's no microscope, it's not microsuction!

No wax?

No wax doesn't always mean no problem

In a small number of cases, we find the ear canal completely clear of wax and the eardrum perfectly visible – yet your ears still feel blocked.

This can signal middle ear congestion, hearing loss, or other conditions that may need further attention. In some cases, it can be more serious and shouldn't be ignored.

At Hearology®, we treat this as part of your appointment – so, if no wax is found, your visit becomes a full Ear Health Consultation at the same price.

Many unregulated ear providers would be unable to continue the appointment and would send you away without any answers, though they might offer a discount. A wax removal service is equipped to remove wax and little else, so when there is none to find there is nothing further they can do, and the usual advice is to go back to your GP and start the wait again. You will have taken the time off, made the journey and learned nothing about why your ear feels blocked, and a partial refund does not answer that question.

At Hearology®, we focus instead on understanding the cause of your hearing problem and ensuring that you'll always leave with clarity on what to do next.

No wax, but still blocked, muffled or ringing? That can point to something else, like an infection, fluid behind the eardrum or a change in your hearing. We don't just send you away; we look for the cause. And if your hearing drops suddenly, that's urgent: call us or NHS 111 the same day.

Something stuck in your ear?

A hearing aid dome, an earring back, the tip of a cotton bud. If something other than wax has found its way into your ear, please don't try to remove it yourself. Our aural foreign body removal appointment is 15 minutes long, available at all five clinics, and uses the same microscope as microsuction, so your clinician can see exactly what they're doing.

I have been struggling to hear properly for a couple of months now due to a wax build up on my ear drums. Bridget did a fantastic job of clearing the wax! I feel like I’ve just bought a top of the range sound system! I no longer have to have the telly on max volume. Everyone at Hearology are so kind and I’d definitely recommend them! Thank you

Frequently asked questions

What does microsuction feel like?

Microsuction usually feels like a light tugging or tickling sensation, and you may hear a suction sound during the procedure. Most patients find microsuction comfortable, calm, and pain-free.

How long does a microsuction appointment take?

Microsuction appointments are usually quick and efficient. Depending on the amount and consistency of the wax, the appointment can take as little as 5 minutes or up to 30 minutes. While many microsuction ear cleaning providers offer 30-minute appointments, the appointment at Hearology is only 15 minutes thanks to the advanced skill level of our clinicians and the quality of our medical equipment.

What happens if you can't fully clean my ears at the appointment?

In rare cases, it may not be possible to fully clear the ears in one appointment, usually because the wax is very stubborn or the ears are sensitive. If this happens, you can book a free follow-up appointment within two weeks of your initial visit.

What happens if there's no wax?

If no ear wax is found on inspection, Hearology will convert your appointment into an Ear Health Consultation. We will then look for other possible causes of the blocked or uncomfortable feeling and discuss the next steps. Unlike many providers, we do not simply turn you away without an explanation.

Can you just clean one ear?

Hearology does not offer a single-ear-only price. We book ear wax removal appointments as bilateral appointments, meaning the consultation is prepared for both ears even if only one ear needs cleaning. In some cases, only one ear may require treatment, but the appointment price remains the same.

Can I go back to work straight afterwards?

Yes, you can usually return to work straight after your appointment. Microsuction is a quick, non-invasive procedure, so most patients carry on with their normal day immediately afterwards.

Can children have this treatment?

Yes. Children aged 3 to 12 have their own children's ear cleaning appointment, which is 30 minutes long. Young people aged 13 to 17 book this standard ear wax removal appointment at the adult price, and a parent or guardian needs to come with them. No anaesthetic is needed, and our clinicians take a gentle, child-friendly approach.

Who will perform the treatment?

At Hearology, microsuction is carried out by an experienced, fully qualified practitioner or audiologist trained in advanced ear wax removal. We use medical-grade equipment to provide safe and precise treatment.

What should I do after microsuction?

We recommend keeping your ears dry for 24 to 48 hours if the ear canal feels irritated, especially if you have recently had infection or itchiness. Avoid putting anything into the ear, including cotton buds, tissues, or other objects.

Will my hearing feel 'too loud' afterwards?

Yes, it can. If you have had a significant build-up of ear wax, normal sounds may feel unusually loud for a short time after treatment while your hearing readjusts.

Why do you use a microscope?

If there's no microscope, it's not microsuction! Microsuction gets its name from the use of a microscope during treatment, and this is a key part of what makes the procedure safe and precise. The microscope gives the clinician the magnified detail and depth-of-field needed to clearly see the ear canal and judge the location of the eardrum. Without an ENT-grade microscope, it is much harder to carry out the treatment safely. That is why Hearology only uses ENT-grade microscopes for microsuction, rather than goggles or other lower-magnification alternatives.
