New safety features on iPhones and iPads make it easier for parents to curb harmful noise exposure
iPhones and iPads are now central to many children’s learning and entertainment, but prolonged exposure to loud audio can damage young ears.
Children’s hearing is more sensitive than adults’, and repeated high-volume listening through headphones is a growing concern for audiologists.
Apple has expanded its parental controls to help parents set firm limits and stop children turning volumes up to unsafe levels.
Setting safe limits
Parents can cap headphone volume by activating the Reduce Loud Sounds feature in settings. This allows a decibel threshold to be set, typically around 90dB or lower, so the device cannot exceed that level even if a child tries to increase it.
The limit applies across apps, giving consistent protection without affecting day-to-day use.
Stopping children from changing settings
Screen Time adds an extra layer of control. With a passcode in place, parents can prevent changes to the Reduce Loud Sounds setting under Content and Privacy Restrictions.
This blocks children from overriding the volume cap and also allows parents to manage wider content, communication and app limits.
Locking volume during specific activities
Guided Access can lock the device into a single app and disable the physical volume buttons.
This is useful when a child is using educational or entertainment apps where a stable volume is preferred.
Extra steps for safer listening
Specialist child-friendly headphones with in-built volume limiters can reduce risk further. Parents can also check listening habits in the Health app, which tracks average exposure over time.
As James Leare, a Clinical Audiologist at Hearology®, said: “Young ears are particularly vulnerable to loud sound, so firm volume limits make a real difference. These controls help parents protect hearing without restricting the positive ways children use technology.”
