The latest model from Cochlear Limited brings future-proof upgrades without further surgery
Cochlear implants are changing. A new system launched by an Australian company allows users to get software updates inside the implant itself – no extra surgery needed.
Cochlear Limited’s Nucleus Nexa System is the first of its kind, with technology that downloads updates directly into the implant. Until now, only the external sound processor could be upgraded when new features came out.
Smarter technology, better hearing
The Nexa implant comes with a new chip and built-in tools that check that the device is working properly. It also stores each user’s unique settings, making it easier to swap or replace parts without affecting sound quality.
The system includes two new sound processors: the Nucleus 8 Nexa fits behind the ear, while the Kanso 3 Nexa is worn off the ear. Both are lighter and smaller than older models and run all day on a rechargeable battery.
An energy-saving feature inside the implant helps the battery last longer by adjusting power use throughout the day.
Easy to personalise
Users and audiologists can fine-tune the device with an app, a smart fitting tool and other support software. People who already use Cochlear Nucleus products can upgrade to the latest sound processor to take advantage of new features.
Doctors and patients are already seeing the benefits. Dr David Kelsall from the Rocky Mountain Ear Center called it “a major advance” with real potential to improve hearing outcomes.
Lori Miller, one of the first users, said the device helped her hear her family again. “It was a life-changing reconnection,” she said.
“Hearing technology is finally catching up with the way we use our other devices,” said Eva Opitz, Clinical Audiologist at Hearology®. “An implant that can be updated over time is a real game-changer. It means patients benefit from excellent care today while staying ready for future improvements without the need for further procedures.”
A big step forward
More than 430 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss. But for children who get cochlear implants early – ideally before their first birthday – up to 80% can reach normal language levels by school age.
The Nexa System offers a new path forward. It’s lighter, smarter and ready for future upgrades, giving users a better hearing experience now and in the years to come.
